JMAC Service Learning 2011-2012
JMAC students are given a myriad of opportunities all year to earn Service Learning hours. Students have been trained in their classes and after school how to use audio/video equipment correctly to enhance and capture any type of performance. Thanks to the district grant, EETT - Enhancing Education Through Technology and ARRA - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, focusing on digital media academies in the Long Beach Unified School District, JMAC was able to purchase software and current equipment for students. The equipment has really motivated our students to earn service learning hours and participate in Work Based Learning projects. Some of the students have earned their hours doing tech crew duties and audio/video/photography for the following: football games, Linked Learning Alliance Fall Convening, volleyball, tennis, basketball, Winter Dance Concert 2011, school play, JMAC Variety Show, Mr. Joiner Retirement, Power 106 Basketball Game, Moore League Wrestling event, and many other events. JMAC is asked all year long to provide video and photography for Jordan staff and for our yearbook. Students were also given opportunities to earn hours presenting our American Flag at three football games and were even in the Press Telegram. Students have participated in going to the Senior Center at Los Carmelitos in Long Beach to bring food, baked goods, and holiday cheer to seniors that might not have visitors during holidays. Students and JMAC teachers visit three times a year, for Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter. JMAC students are always willing to go the extra mile and have built a strong bond among other JMAC students and teachers! Having current technology and enough equipment for students to use at events has really increased motivation and participation in JMAC. We have a saying in JMAC..."We don't pretend to operate equipment and work at imaginary events..... we actually use our current equipment to enhance and capture real, live events."
